Collection activities The museum of Modern Art in Rhodes holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Greek Art of the 20th Century. The collection consist of an extensive number of paintings and prints , along with smaller number of sculptures , drawings and valuable documents by the most renowned Greek artist. Maleas,Parthenis,Theofilos,Tsarouchis,Bouzianis, Chanzikiriakos, Ghikas,Moralis,are some of grand names that embody it's collection of more than 1000 artworks .Founded in 1959 and widely acclaimed as leading contemporary art institution with manifold activities (important shows publications ,site specific installations ,educational programmes ,seminars , participations in international fairs and exhibitions etc) the museum offers tothe viewer an invaluable insight to the true cultural identity of Modern Greek Art. The Venues Owing to the foresight and efforts of it's founder , Mr Andreas Ioannou ,the Museum has had the fortune of housing it's collections in an independent historical building ,located near the entrance to the medieval town of Rhodes ,Simis square . In the late 50's it was the first art gallery of the Greek art to acquire permanent istallations. Gradually the Museum has been expanding it's venues ,mainly due to the constant enrichment of it's collection and the increasing need for temporary shows. The centre of Contemporary Art Museum is located in the heart of the Medieval Town ,on Sokratous street. The annual art project MoTeR, which aims at promoting contemporary artist from all over Greece ,takes place there. Nestoridion Melathron ,is a three-story venue with all contemporary museum facilities ,such as a museum shop ,a multimedia room, a library and preervation - renovation labs.
