The Medieval city of Rhodos The Great Hamam
Located to Arionos square in the old town of Rhodes. Great Hamam is one of the most important bathhouses in the hole of the Ottoman Empire. It is Known under different names: Baths of Suleiman ,Mustafa Baths, and Yeni Hamam, which means new Baths . It is first mentioned in 1558 in a census of existing buildings ordered by Sultan Seli, who succeeded Suleiman the Magnificent .The first part of Great Hamam was the men's baths, a severe, square ,symmetrical structure which dominates the square. The women's baths were a later addition ,under Mustafa Pasha ,and detract slightly from the symmetry of the whole. The interior is even more impressive ,especially the men's cold chamber with its huge dome, opulent marble facing and elegant central fountain. The warm areas also have a distinctive atmosphere, and are lit and ventilated by small apertures in the domes . The baths were recently renovated and are now once again open to the public.
