Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Cream the butter thoroughly in
a bowl and gradually add the sugar while beating. Beat the
eggs until light and creamy and with a spoon fold them into
the butter and sugar. Stir in the milk with a wooden spoon,
then slowly add the flour, baking powder, salt and lemon peel.
Pour the batter into a
well-greased 9x12 pan and bake about 25 minutes.
Mix the topping ingredients
together in a bowl. Remove the cake from the oven and spoon
the mixture evenly over the hot cake and return it to the oven
to bake for another 5 minutes. The juice will penetrate into
the cake and the sugar will crust over the top.

You can cut the warm cake into serving size squares and
arrange them on a platter, ready for when company calls.
